| 内容記述 | The purpose of this article is especially focused upon the role of singing hymns among the people called “Methodist” of the 18th century in the process of making up their new community out of their conventional society. Methodism is a religious Revivalism in the Church of England of the 18th century developed by Rev. John Wesley（1703-91). Especially by singing they not only confess their faith but realize the sense of experiential unity. The Church of England after the Religious Reformation has provided the norm and the morality to the community as a public religion based upon its own tradition. It was possible only in the parish where people had long been bonded. However, “Methodist” are those who have been broken from these bondage due to the Industrial Revolution. ”Methodism”is from the outset characterized by John Wesley’s personal spiritual awakening. His spiritual experience has been a criterion for the Methodists. It would be regarded that hymns as an communal song has greatly influenced to build up their unity. A consideration upon Methodist’s hymns would possibly provide a new insight of understanding a sense of the public spirit which an individual could experience from conventional religious practices into a new religious sense. |
