In this research paper I argue that the novel discloses the great astronomer grappling with the value of his own scientific project when challenged by alternative models of inquiry. Tracking Copernicus’s engagement with the contestations of （respectively) scholarly orthodoxy, radical empiricism, and mysticism, I submit that the challenge to the scientific personality framed here is as much existential as epistemological. What Banville is exploring is ultimately the interpenetration of fiction and science.
