When disasters or other emergencies occur, a large amount of information is disseminated via social media. In Japan, social media established itself as a societal resource for the transmission and sharing of information following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. However, comparatively little research has been conducted in Japan regarding the distribution of information via social media and the trust with which that information is perceived. In an information-oriented society, it is desirable that systems be designed in which citizens can actively participate in the development and improvement of society by taking on certain roles and responsibilities. In this study, (“logical thinking”,“ respect others’ opinions”,“ trust others”, and“ self-centeredness”) were extracted from an attitude survey conducted of people who actively contribute to social media. Of these, a factor called“ logical thinking” was suggested as being particularly important. By focusing on the role played by these factors, this study explores effective mechanisms for communicating via social media that enable mutual understanding.
