Thus, the ideal is for teaching to enable learners to come into direct contact with natural events and phenomena while also arousing their interest. To this end, it is imperative that we train teachers who can develop classes while conducting appropriate observation and experimentation. Moreover, this requires not only for students who aspire to become teachers to be well versed in the science taught in elementary schools but also for universities to cultivate their abilities as teachers, including observation skills, experimentation skills, and considerations of safety. This university has a student-initiated course (referred to below as the Rika Kyoshi Juku (“science teachers’ cram school”)) that runs separate from regular lectures and aims to nurture students’ abilities to teach science. In this course, students are trained to conduct observations and experiments covered in Grades 3-6 of elementary school and to further their study of the teaching materials. In addition, by conducting and observing mock classes, students learn how to evaluate and improve their lessons. Moreover, the university holds science events (referred to below as “events”) to give students the opportunity to use the educational skills and teaching methods that they have learned in a practical environment. These events are held approximately 10 times a year, and any student is welcome to participate. In this study, we considered whether the students’ participation in these events affected their awareness of their motivations to study science and their aspirations to become teachers.
