These abilities and skills will be increasingly in need in elementary school classrooms. However, discussions held in elementary school classrooms often remain at the level of students merely presenting their opinions without reaching an agreement. One of the reasons for this is that the process of discussion is not instructed clearly.  This study analyzed and examined elementary school Japanese class textbook teaching materials for discussions that had been published between 2011 and 2015 with a focus on the process of discussion for the purpose of building discussion abilities and skills for reaching an agreement.
