A total of 575 middle, junior and/or high school-level classroom teachers were identified to participate in an online survey. The analyses of survey data suggest that a majority of the teachers responding to this survey devote some attention to the subject of North Korea. In the case of half of those teachers, however, that attention is limited to one hour or less per semester. The topics addressed most frequently by these teachers are related to conflict and warfare, social control, and economic organization. These are three topics related to North Korea that many individuals are familiar with, in part perhaps because these topics tend to dominate electronic and print media coverage of that nation. Teachers who include North Korea-related topics in their curricula rely for the most part on lecture, discussion and films as their preferred teaching methods. Interesting to note, as well, is the relatively large number of teachers employing what might be described as “student-centered” strategies such as cooperative learning, journaling and inquiry methods. The teachers in this study also tend to rely mostly upon textbooks and the internet as sources of information about North Korea. Results also suggest that the reasons for not teaching about North Korea, and the difficulties encountered by teachers are more or less the same. That is, in most cases the reasons teachers do not include the study of North Korea in their curricula to a higher degree are either lack of time, lack of information, and/or the assumption that state standards only address the Korean War.}, pages = {175--186}, title = {アメリカの中高社会科教員は北朝鮮についてどのように何を教えているのか ― インディアナ州中学・高校社会科教員への調査をもとに ―}, volume = {8}, year = {2014} }
