Score reading is a psychological act with strict time constraints as well as a reflexive act in which the perceived pitch and rhythm must be immediately transferred to physical movement. There are two types of score-reading methods: instrumental score reading and vocal score reading, with the latter including solmization and a-b-c-dieren. Using the kindergarten education guidelines and the elementary and junior high school curriculum guidelines, I clarify why students are not good at reading scores, although they are familiar with music during pre-school education and have compulsory music classes. Additionally, I enumerate the steps taken by teachers to improve students’ score-reading abilities and also reflect on my own practice. The results of students’ efforts revealed that notation and arrangement using MuseScore is a creative learning activity that has the potential to foster reading, arranging, and musical thinking skills while having fun.
